SCPa Works partnering with The Fortress and MANTEC on tech initiative.
Today, President Obama announced nationwide commitments made to help prepare our children and our nation for the future. Included in this group was a partnership made up of the York, Pa based “The Fortress Initiative”, MANTEC and SCPa Works. In late 2015 and early 2016, The Fortress Initiative was invited to participate in several events at the White House around preparing our communities for the future. It was here The Fortress Initiative was fortunate enough to participate by speaking on the challenges facing 3rd tier cities as part of a select and diverse group of entrepreneurs, government officials, technologists and other key stakeholders.
The outcome of these summits were plans and a clear call to action for groups represented at the events to publicly commit to large and meaningful goals. In response to this call to action, the Fortress Initiative acquired the Western National Bank in downtown York and with it’s partners MANTEC and SCPa Works have risen to the challenge by mobilizing their base and making significant commitments to prepare the central Pennsylvania region for the the growing demand for a highly skilled tech workforce.
As part of the national TechHire initiative, the partnership has committed to the following:
- The Fortress Initiative will open its first Disruptive Technology center in York, PA by the end of 2016, and centers in four additional cities across the central PA region by 2021.
- Through these centers, the Fortress Initiative and its partners, including MANTEC and SCPa Works, will engage 1,000 employers and provide technical skills training to 300, 17–29-year-olds of all backgrounds, with a focus on young people of color, veterans, and women.
- The Initiative will raise a $20 million, multi-city venture fund to invest in entrepreneurs and students who complete the Initiative’s training.
“Our mission at SCPa Works is to unlock the human talent that drives the development of businesses and individuals, and we believe our partnership with The Fortress and MANTEC is a critical strategy for strengthening our region’s workforce,” says Kevin Perkey CEO SCPa Works. “We believe that we can prepare our local communities for the opportunities of today and the promise of tomorrow. “
When asked about the partnerships commitment, John McElligott, President of The Fortress Initiative had this to say; “To be included on this list is an honor. We may be a smaller city, but we’re the only city that has a history of stepping up to save the world. We were the first capital of the United States, we were the birthplace of the York Plan and if we’re going to commit to something, we want it to be a moonshot!”
John Lloyd, CEO of MANTEC added, “At MANTEC we see technology training as a growing need. As manufacturers incorporate automation, robotics and IT into their business we must remain committed to ensuring manufacturing remains in the forefront of the South Central Pennsylvania economy.”
