As qualified employees within the workforce are vital to the success of an economy, it is important that people begin gaining experience and training at younger ages through programs such as apprenticeships. Across the nation, there are over 22,000 apprenticeship programs with approximately 533,000 apprentices. In 2017, there were 16,662 reported active apprentices within 761 active programs. With a 42% national increase since 2013, apprenticeships are becoming more popular as more employees within the trade industry are needed. This being said, apprenticeships are now expanding from traditional trade force roles to white-collar positions. To alleviate college debt, apprenticeships allow students and graduates opportunities to earn money while gaining knowledge and experience within their desired industry. Aside from the potential employees, apprenticeships are also beneficial for the associated companies. By spending time in the workforce rather than a classroom, trainees acquire the skills they will need to be prepared and succeed in the future job position, an asset that assists in closing the skills gap. One of our main missions at SCPa Works is to work towards decreasing this skills gap through our career development services such as apprenticeship opportunities. On July 25th from 8:30am-1:30pm, The Training and Education Fund will be hosting the event Apprenticeship Accelerator and Form on the Expansion of Registered Apprentices. If you think college may not be for you, we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to explore another excellent option!
